Michigan Referee Committee offers unique learning opportunity

The Michigan Referee Committee (MRC) has just told us about a new referee learning opportunity that they are bringing to us locally at the Portage Soccer Classic, June 11-13. The program targets newer referees with less than 3 years experience on the field and offers two different ways to gain insights into becoming a better referee. There will be up to an hour of on-field instruction before observing the scheduled matches on Fri night. The Friday session will feature a number of interactive, on-field instructional activities. The first will take place on Friday June 11 at Portage Soccer Club. Participants will be broken up into small groups with USSF Instructors to watch a soccer match. The focus will be on watching the referee team during the match. The instructors will be available to explain referee decisions, positioning, etc. and to answer questions the participants have about the match.

The second opportunity will be during your own games during the weekend. Participants will work with instructors during their matches to get feedback on changes they can implement to make themselves better referees. These will not be formal assessments; they will be mentoring sessions where instructors will give the participants a few focus areas to work to improve during their next match. You do not have to referee the center of a match to participate. The instructors will help both center referees and assistant referees. Those who have registered to referee at the Portage Soccer Classic and wish to participate in the program can contact John Nadzam (jnadzam@sbcglobal.net) to get signed up for the training program.

More experienced referees who need maintenance or upgrade assessments, or those who would like some mentoring, can also contact John. Those assessments and mentoring sessions will be scheduled as time and assessor availability allow.
